“990” Instructional Hours
As shared in the past two weeks’ Rev Reports, during our District’s five-year review this past year, DESE (Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education) cited the high school for not meeting the mandated 990 hours of instruction required for every 9th - 12th grader in a school year. We have one school year to correct this issue, which means we will make changes that will take effect for the next school year, 2027-2028.
There are three areas that we need to address to comply with DESE guidelines: 1) all students will need to be fully scheduled; 2) we will need to add 18 total hours to the overall school year; and 3) seniors' last day of school can be no more than 12 days before the end of the 9th - 11th graders’ school year.
We have formed a 990 Committee at the high school, and we are currently working on the guiding principles for our work. We will share this with students and families for feedback soon. Additionally, on October 15, the High School 990 Committee will share an update at the School Committee meeting. Within the next two weeks, we will share the dates of student and family forums and feedback opportunities. We will also discuss this at the first School Council meeting on October 7, and students and community members are welcome.
